Those Summer Nights; a look back at the 2016 Wedding Season

With the first sip of wedding season Champagne now many a celebratory weekend ago, it’s been a beautifully busy summer at Lodge Farm House.

Toasts aplenty, we’ve welcomed no less than nine happy couples and their guests, with each big day seeing the Farm transformed. From classic summer celebrations to Moroccan teepees, crisp white quintessentially British marquees to botanical extravaganzas, our views over the rolling Hertfordshire countryside have provided the perfect blank canvas.

Our favourite sights of the season? Brides, blooms in hand, taking their first steps down the Farm’s traditional wooden staircase, pastel bunting blowing in the breeze, the lawn lit by candlelight, our Secret Garden adorned with bunches of wild flowers for an August afternoon blessing, the tallest cake we’ve seen to date making its way from catering truck to top table, yards of fabric turned into breathtaking marquee entrance and dancing figures against the setting sun.

Amongst all of this celebration, we even found the time to launch our new bar, the aptly named, Tipsy Pony (playing homage to our four-legged field residents, now unperturbed by post speech roars of laughter and guests dancing into the night). The transformed trailer sits beautifully in our rural surroundings, and has proved quite the attraction – although perhaps this is due to its (alcoholic) contents!

And for every wedding celebration, come rain, wind and scorching September shine, we’ve seen platefuls of delicious dining leaving our kitchen in the expert hands of Kingfisher Event Caterers; a five tier cheese cake with homemade biscuits, breads and chutneys, warm salads of chorizo, green beans, butternut squash and baby spinach, twice baked soufflés with figs, herbs and parmesan cream, fish and chips served alongside Beckett’s London Dry Gin and traditional meats with all the trimmings to name a few.

And so, as the Farm sits peacefully in the same tranquil surroundings we fell for years ago, we look forward to the weddings of 2017. In just a few weeks, we’ll be exclusively welcoming those couples with dates set to our Open Day, where they can glimpse into the possibilities that our idyllic venue offers. At Lodge Farm we’re part of a thriving estate, and relish the opportunity to play our role in the wider countryside community.

The Herts Air Ambulance is a Charity that runs on the generosity of donations and support of local businesses. With costs running at around £500,000 a month, the team save lives, reduce or prevent disability, by delivering pre-hospital emergency medical treatment within our rural areas.

20160609_132214And so, on a sunny Thursday afternoon, and with a fondness for tea, cake and happy hosting, we opened the Lodge Farm gates to hold a fundraiser.

Out on our terrace, overlooking the rolling Hertfordshire hills, guests were welcomed with homemade Pink Lemonade and Mojitos mixed up in the Lodge Farm Kitchen, before sipping on Prosecco.

With bubbles, came stacks of neat sandwiches and homemade quiche of which we’re confident Mary Berry would be proud (no soggy bottoms here).

20160609_132105And no Afternoon Tea would be complete without cakes a plenty. With plenty of tempting treats on offer, plates were piled with Bakewell tarts, macaroons, cream cakes and sweet biscuits.

The terrace provided the perfect place to enjoy the late afternoon warmth, and as the raffle unfolded to much excitement from a table of particularly lucky winners and funds raised reached £425, it was decided; this an event to be repeated.

Horse Talk

Much excitement this week as we move the horses over to summer grazing. Yes, warm mornings and balmy evenings are on the horizon.

And with spring in the air, we’ve been hard at work with creating new space and the most of our barns and outhouses.

With Shelley leading the rejig in typical calm, cool and collected fashion we now have an exceptionally well organised Feed Room, complete with chalk board with our liveries favoured breakfasts and dinners (that’ll be carrots and apples all round).

Making the most of the fine weather, we’ve been encouraging horses (much patience necessary) to load quietly onto trailers and lorries for a number of outings. Jim and Lance and Steve and Sandwich are currently our most well travelled residents, taking on dressage and a 10 mile sponsored ride over one weekend. We’re still questioning whether riders should be returning more tired than their steeds?

Not to be outdone, team Gordon have once again taken the showing circuit by storm in their first of the season outing this bank holiday weekend. They returned home happy, with a two wins and a third place for Lacey and Jasmine. Make way for a summer of polished boots, gleaming tack and an exceptionally smart Fudge.

So at the start of Spring, all is well on the yard; our favourite white chicken continues to rule the roost (and finish off the tea room biscuits), whilst our four legged residents can look forward to longer days of rug free turn out – sunshine dependant!

Supper is on our Menu

Take note guests; there’s something about the country air for building an appetite. After an evening with feet up in front of our fire, or a stroll around the grounds, join us in the dining room for a hearty, homemade supper.

Cooking famed feasts for family and friends in our country kitchen was the inspiration for serving delicious evening meals for guests.

Yes, come early eve, you’ll find Maria by the Range, cookbook in hand, preparing foods inspired by the countryside we’re nestled in. The menu changes daily to feature fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.

Our favourite supper to date? The coq au vin.

We’re told the recipe is a farmhouse secret, but we chanced a look into the kitchen at just the right time to see shallots, garlic, bacon and thyme gently browning in a knob of butter, before being ushered back out to enjoy a tipple from the farm’s very own honesty bar.

We know just how good food can cheer. And so it’s quite possible that there’s no better way to unwind before an early morning flight, after countryside amble or long distance drive, than an evening meal. Come balmy summers evening or chilly autumnal night, you’ll make way to bed content and – most importantly – full.
